KAMPALA-UGANDA/NEWSDAY: Eleven pupils of Salama School of the Blind in Mukono district have died in a fire that gutted their hostel on Monday night.

The fire is said to have broken out in the girl’s hostel at around 11 pm at the school that is based in Ntenjeru-Kisoga town council.

The Mukono division police commander, Annabelle Nyinamahoro, says that there were 17 children in the hostel but only seven were rescued and rushed to Herona hospital.

Moses Ndawula, the Salama village LC I chairperson, says that he received the news about the fire at midnight and mobilized the village team to help save the learners. He, however, says that the fire was too much and they only managed to save a few children who were at the entrance.

Ndawula explains that it was hard for the children to help themselves since they are visually impaired. Police have cordoned off the school premises.
