WAKISO-UGANDA/NEWSDAY: Masanafu- Ssentema road construction project has started with a section of the road closed and travellers now using alternative routes between Nakabugo and Lugala to the City.

Works started at a swamp at Lugala and the road has been closed off for use from the Late Prof Apollo Nsibambi’s residence to a junction at Lugala.

Chinese Company,China Communications Construction Company (Uganda)Ltd (CCCC) was contracted by the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and Wakiso District.

It is an inconvenience but but less that the pothole nightmare we have suffered, one motorist said.

The ongoing works are part of the plan to decongest the hugely crowded roads that lead into and out of the city. Officials said the Ssentema road is part of the greater Kampala Metropolitan plan that seeks to modernise Kampala city satellite towns.

The road will also assist to reduce the vehicle maintenance costs and reduce travel hours between areas in Wakiso District covering Wakiso’s subcounty of Mumyuka, Wakiso Town council, Nakabugo Parish and Buloba. Motorists going to Hoima road and Mityana will also be able to use the project road conviniently.

The road will ease access to the Chinese, Buganda Kingdom owned estate of Mirembe at Ssentema and the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) housing estate at Temangalo.

Signages have been raised to show road diversions

It was not readily established what the road will cost but there is likely to be penalties in the initial construction cost after KCCA delayed to clear the contractor because the contract was awarded without a supervisor consulting company.

Wakiso District Engineer Sam Mwesigwa said the works my last up to a year.
