KAMPALA. Mr. Elvis Kintu Nsonyi the ex- Personal Assistant (PA) to Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has blamed his struggle to see Uganda as a free nation led him to free the country-losing his juicy job.
Kintu says he earned Shs.7.600.000 an equivalent of USD2,033.25 monthly as per the Public Service guidelines.
He joined Kampala Capital city authority (KCCA) as personal assistant to the Lord Mayor in 2018 and this created him a sense of more responsibility in running the errands of the Lord Mayor.
“Working with the Lord Mayor’s office among all the position I held, demands for tirelessness, endless engagements and quick decision making. You are the ball at the center in the field- you are kicked,” Kintu says.
Lord Mayor Lukwago, a Buganda Vice Chairperson for the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) is a leading opposition figure. His stance is often radically different from the ruling party NRM whose President is dictator Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
During the formative stages of the People Power Movement that later transformed into the National Unity Platform, Kintu was pivotal
In 2011, Kintu coordinated elections in Masaka District (Buwunga and Kyanamukaaka) together with Hon. Evans Kanyike, MP Bukoto East. His political activities are also traced in various by-elections in Entebbe, Luweero, Bukoto South, Butambala, Jinja and elsewhere, where the opposition took a good ground.
At Makerere university, Kintu was the Guild Prime Minister in the 2009/2010 Guild Cabinet. In the 2011 general elections, the late Dr. John Ssebaana Kizito appointed him on the DP task force as the in charge of the Norbert Mao election team.
“After the elections, I became the executive assistant to DP President Norbert Mao and then later, I became the capacity strengthening coordinator of DP. Being an assistant to the Lord Mayor offered me a lot of traveling opportunities as a VIP; thrice to the United States of America, South Africa, Ecuador among some countries, but it also came with innumerable threats because of the Lord Mayor’s strong position on fighting the mafia cartels in the City” Kintu says.
“If life had a replacement, I would have opted to stay back home-enjoying a good salary and it’s attendant privileges. But I cannot allow myself to suffer the same way the likes of Kakwenza Rukirabashaija endured,” Kintu says.
Kintu’s fears were exacerbated by the arrest of an innocent man, Umar Magala the NUP Coordinator Kawempe and Personal Assistant to KCCA Executive Secretary Civil works. Magala was picked from the Lord Mayor’s office and still he is incarcerated at Luzira Prison.
“You will also remember the cold blood murder of the driver to Bobi Wine- Yasin Kawuma, many of our brothers have been imprisoned for their political leaning. At KCCA, I received lots of threats especially during the attempted boda boda registration in 2022. You don’t have to wait to die. You can only contribute to the struggle when alive,” Kintu says.
Great friends
Mr Kintu has also clarified on reports that he had parted ways with his former boss Erias Lukwago.
“I talk to the Lord Mayor regularly and do some work remotely. We don’t have any issues between us as some reports appear to depict,” Kintu says.
He says he remains friends with Bobi Wine with whom they have been working to transform the nation. Bobi Wine also performed at my wedding in 2016 before him joining politics, and I never paid him a single coin.
