Kampala, Uganda – A fresh controversy has emerged in Uganda’s music industry surrounding OMP (Omukenkufu Muzik Permit) jerseys, initially intended to foster unity among artists. Instead, the branded merchandise has become a flashpoint of conflict, raising concerns about copyright, licensing, and fair compensation.

The jerseys, associated with the OMP label founded by Omukenkufu Shaman Ug, were introduced as a promotional effort to boost visibility for local musicians. However, some artists affiliated with the initiative are now questioning the transparency behind the distribution and royalty arrangements, claiming they have not been properly informed or compensated.

At the heart of the issue lies Uganda’s evolving copyright landscape. Omukenkufu Shaman Ug has publicly stated his support for strong copyright protection but expressed doubt about how effectively the Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF), led by Eddy Kenzo, is handling enforcement. “We can’t talk about fairness in music while artists are left guessing how revenues are shared,” Shaman noted in a recent interview.
