Kato Lubwama: Lubaga cathedral stops requiem mass over traditional shrine ownership.

KAMPALA -UGANDA/NEWSDAY: The Catholic church has stopped a requiem mass that had been planned in memory of the late Kato Lubwama at Lubaga cathedral.

The church based it’s decision on Kato’s ownership of of a traditional shrine and failure to attend church contrary to its values.

But in a radio interview, Mr Abbey Mukiibi, sounded to dismiss the church’s position explaining it’s only the venue that was changed.

” We have only had a small program change. Instead of going to Lubaga, we will have the requiem mass at St. Matia Mulumba at old Kampala,” Mukiibi said explaining the change was a family request because Old Kampala is their family church.

It is also reported that Kato Lubwama, a former Lubaga South, MP between 2016 and 2021 will not have official catholic representatives to hold any form of prayers at his home.

Lubwama died at at Sterna clinic at Mutundwe in the wee hours of Wednesday of heart failure.

Quoting the Kampala archdiocese Chancellor, Rev. Dr. Pius Male Ssentumbwe, Bukedde newspaper reported a requiem mass is only meant for those who during life were active members of the church.

He said that if family members were active church goers, they can be allowed to pray for the dead in church but the body may be rejected at the church aisle or podium.

Vincent Kawunde he had no memory of seeing Kato Lubwama in church and that he through officials channels relayed this information to the archibishop and consequently the decision to ban the body of Lubwama from church.

Fr. Denis Warren Kibalama, a former priest at Mutundwe said he remembers seeing Kato Lubwama once at the church when he was canvassing for votes.
