The Democratic Party (DP) has joined  public calls for the Local Defence Unit (LDU) personnel to be disarmed to save lives being lost in their reckless hands.

“We demand that they (LDUs)  be disarmed for the purpose and intent of saving lives of Ugandans that continue to be lost through negligence in the use of guns,” a statement by the DP released on Friday April 30, 2021 said.

Mr. Robert Kagolo, a journalist working with Star FM and former Uganda Journalist Association (UJA) President died of gun wounds on the night of Thursday after an LDU, Rashid Mamuli shot him.

He said the Democratic Party strongly believes that, it is not necessary for LDUs to be given guns as they lack enough training to act professionally with such weapons.

They condemned “with utmost level of impetus the decision taken by government to abandon guns in the hands of such persons; and we demand that they be disarmed for the purpose”.

Mr. Kagolo was gunned down in Wakiso at the home of his brother Samuel Musiitwa who was also killed this week. The death of Musiitwa led to the arrest of his wife, Ayo Florence for her suspected involvement in the abduction and murder of her husband.
