National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Bobi Wine has said he doesn’t owe any money to the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), moments after President Museveni ordered his armored Land cruiser UBJ 667F released.

“We will not pay anything to URA because we owe them nothing. The vehicle was valued and we paid all the taxes. Why have they returned the vehicle if they say we owe them money,” Bobi Wine said on Tuesday.

The vehicle had been impounded by URA last month on accusations there was falsification of declaration of its make. In a letter to Wine’s lawyers, URA said Monday June 7 that although the vehicle had been released, Bobi Wine must pay an outstanding debt of SHs. 249m in addition to Shs. 88m that he earlier paid. The tax value for the vehicle is Shs.337m.

Meanwhile Wine also demanded the release of other vehicles impounded in Arua in 2018 but he added that the debate should not even be on the vehicles but on the NUP supporters who are being incarcerated in detentions.

“We need our people released. We were waiting for them in court but courts have been closed. Our people must be released,” Bobi said.

He said he will not use the vehicle before a thorough check of any devices that may have been planted in there is carried out.

“I won’t use it before it is thoroughly checked,” Wine said.
