LIRA-UGANDA/NEWSDAY: A former reporter of the defunct Rupiny newspaper, recently owned by the Vision Group has been held over allegedly killing his girlfriend.

Jasper Awio, is being held by police in Lira District as investigators scour for evidence.
Awio allegedly slit his ex-lover’s throat before cutting off her hands and police in Lira told Newsday, the suspect had confessed the crime to after the body of Monica Amongi
was found decomposing.

The late Amongi and Awio had reportedly stayed amid rifts.

“Go your way and I will go my way,” Amongi reportedly told the journalist sometime in August 2021 at the peak of their breakdown.

 It is not clear on the date Amongi was murdered but her body was found decomposing after a huge stench and hovering flies around her house on April 2, 2022 at Anai Ober cell, Anai ward in Lira City West Division and police said Awio who had been missing resurfaced and handed himself to Lira City West Police Station.

“He confessed to the crime,” a cording to Jimmy Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga regional police spokesperson.

It is not clear why the relationship of the two broke up but when this occured,Amongi rented her own house to which the now suspected killer frequented,making unsuccessfully attempts to rekindle their relationship.

 “He assaulted the deceased and cut her throat before locking the house and disappearing,” police stated on Thursday.
