A search is on for the body of a 70-year-old man in Bugiri district who has been washed by running water into a swamp this morning is underway.
Yusuf Dirimunsawo had gone to inspect his rice garden in Igogero swamp in Nakawa village in Busowa town council when the incident happened.
His brother, Badiru Naminya says that Dirimunsawo left home at around 5:30 am but delayed to return prompting them to check what had delayed him.
“Dirimunsawo normally returns home around 7:00 am but by 8:00 am he hadn’t returned. So we decided to mount a search for him and managed to recover his hat and coat flowing across the swamp,” he says.
He says a team of rice farmers across the swamp have pitched camped in different wetlands to try and find his body. Paul Nzimuri, the Nakawa Village LC I Chairperson, says that rice farmers often get washed down in the swamps.
“Due to many accidents around rice farms during rainy seasons, we identified some energetic youths who act as our vigilante teams. These youth inspect rice farms in the morning and can easily tipoff farmers not to go to high-risk areas,” he said.
The Busoga East police spokesperson, James Mubi, says that efforts are on to find the deceased’s body.
