Police in Jinja city have arrested forty people for violating the 9:00 pm night curfew. The suspects are being detained at Nalufenya police station.

At least,40 suspects accused of operating shops and street vending beyond 9:00pm are in detention for contravening the covid19 restrictions.

The suspects were arrested on Tuesday night from the suburbs of Budhumbuli and Wanyama in Bugembe ward, Jinja City.

Rahmah Namuddu, a resident of Wanyama zone says that several cases of theft were being recorded during curfew time, prompting residents to alert police.

“Much as most of us lock our houses at around 9:00 pm, thieves normally orchestrate syndicated robberies at around 11:00 pm which necessitated us to alert police,” she says.

The acting Jinja Central Police Commander, Maurice Niyonzima says that the operation which started at 11:00 pm to 4:00 am resulted from endless complaints by the residents who accused some members of the business community of not adhering to the curfew restrictions which had in turn caused cases of insecurity.

Niyonzima says that the suspects’ files have been processed and forwarded to the state attorney for legal advice.
