How journalist Mugalula survived Kitalya remand

KAMPALA-UGANDA/NEWSDAY:
Journalist Moses Mugalu was Thursday granted a cash bail of Shs.500.000, letting him off the remand noose the Buganda Chief Magistrate had handed him in a defamation.

Mugalula was Tuesday ramanded for two weeks to Kitalya Prison after fellow scribe and Kireka ward council of to Wakiso District, Ruth Faith Nakanwagi sued him after alleged defamatory statements in which Mugalula allegedly, in February called her his former girlfriend who is “Stony, Sandy and dry”.

Although Mugalula was sent to Kitalya, he never made it there. A prisons bus that was supposed to take him did not turn up for two days because there are few suspects sent for remand because of covid19. On Thursday while was still being detained at CPS, a production warrant was secured for him and bail granted. The case resumed on 4th October.

Having failed to take him to Kitalya, the Prisons services requested the Central Police Station (CPS) officials to provide Mugalula safe custody on their behalf.

He has stayed at CPS for two days until his walk to freedom. While here, he has had access to his mobile phone and has been communicating with colleagues in he various groups where he is a member.

The prosecutor in Mugarura’s case is Joanita Tumukyirize while the Magistrate is Fredris Otau.
