KAMPALA-UGANDA/NEWSDAY: Kawempe North MP Mohammad Ssegirinya is in coma for the third day.

Amid tight secrecy and security, reports say he was quickly evacuated from Luzira Prisons on Sunday where he is remanded for charges related to inciting violence.

He is now hospitalised at Mulago referral hospital. Ssegirinya’s Sunday evacuation to Mulago is the second in a space of four days.

On Wednesday last week, his lawyer and Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago said that was dying from Luzira yet authorities were not doing enough to ensure he receives the required medication.

Lukwago during a talk show on Wednesday said Ssegirinya collapsed from a Luzira Prisons clinic and blacked out forcing officials to rush him to hospital.

Lukwago visited the MP on Monday to assess his condition.

“At Mulago they injected him and he regained some energy. We thought he would be retained for further management but instead he was returned to the Prison,” Lukwago said.

He added that they are working around the clock to get the MP out of Prison so that he is taken to a private hospital.

“When he was returned to Luzira (Hon Medard) Ssegona visited and he left crying. Ssegirinya cannot sit or stand he is too ill. There are no jokes in his situation,” Lukwago said adding that they want Ssegirinya diagnosed of cancer.

Ssegirinya was sent to Luzira two weeks ago on charges of inciting violence. He was removed from Kigo where he is seperately facing remanded on seven counts including terrorism, murder, among others with Makindye West MP Allan Ssewanyana.

On Monday last week, Justice Lawrence Tweyanze refused to grant the MPs bail saying the chances of the two MPs absconding from court are high and that they failed to prove that they’re sick and need better medical attention outside prison. The judge also said he feared they would interfere with the criminal proceedings against them, yet earlier Justice Nakintu had granted them bail before they were rearrested.
