KAYUNGA-UGANDA/NEWSDAY: At least 500 former National Unity Platform (NUP) Members have joined the MK Army and vowed to canvass support for their new leader, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

The NUP defectors announced their allegiance to Gen. Muhoozi at an event on Sunday at Busaana stadium in Kayunga District where the MK Army mobilisers organized a rally on Sunday.

MK Army Buganda Vice Chairman, Frank Gashumba decorated the new comers and told them MK was Uganda’s incoming President.

“That you have gathered in such large numbers in an area formerly an opposition strong hold, is indicative of the trust ypou have in us,” Mr. Gashumba said, promising revamping of the social services sector and improved livelihood while Muhoozi will be leader.

“We have now seen the light. We have lived in the shadow for quite long,” the group leader said.

The event was also attended by the MK movement National Vice Chairperson Michael Mawanda and Vice chairperson Western Uganda MK movement Mr. Ateenyi Balaam.

Uncertianity in 2026

Gen Muhoozi’s spokespeople have been made clear that the general will never be on the same ballot with his father.

Twice this year, Mr. Museveni has declined suggestions on being a Presidential candidate in the 2026 elections.

But analysts say that Museveni is pretending.

“The fact is that he will be on the ballot. He is just using his son as a front man to get together the youth who have renegaded from his government. Museveni will contest and Muhoozi is likely to be on the ballot in 2031 when Mr. Museveni’s age will have become a natural deterrent factor,” Mr. Kisira Gabunga said.

In February, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni declined to sign an endorsement for his 2026 candidature saying that there is time for everything, noting that Ugandans should focus on wealth creation through calculative agriculture.

Last week at his Party’s retreat in Kyankwanzi he scolded suggestions of being the sole candidate in 2026.
