KAMPALA: The fourth bishop-elect of Luweero diocese, Can. Godfrey Kasana Ssemakula, has been disqualified over grounds that he had two mistresses with whom he sired children.
A petition to the House of Bishops indicates that although Ssemakula, 52, was officially married in the 1990s, he had two other ‘side dishes’ and he had kept in contact with them.
The petitioners allege that one of the women has two boys and keeps asking the man of God for support.
Details gathered by the petitioners include text messages from the mother of the two boys, asking for money to buy soda, pay TV subscription, do hair, buy sigiri, transport as well as airtime and food.
Following the petition, the bishops of the Anglican Church met and decided that Ssemakula was not fit to be a bishop.
As the Church searches for another bishop, Kaziimba will be caretaker of the diocese when the term of office of the current bishop expires.
Church of side dishes?
However, extra-marital affairs are not new to the Anglican Church.
Ntagali’s adultery scandal became public after Church of Uganda Archbishop Steven Kaziimba Mugalu suspended him from performing priestly duties.
Ntagali served as 8th Archbishop of the Church of Uganda until March 1, 2020, when he clocked the retirement age of 65.
While accepting Ntagali’s confession, Kaziimba said: “When we say we have no sins, we’re deceiving ourselves but when we confess our sins to the almighty God he’s just. Forgive us all our ineptitudes.”
It is not clear if Ssemakula confesses his sins he will be pardoned. Similarly it is not yet understood whether he will retain his current priestly title of Canon.
