KISORO: The Police in Kigezi sub-region have arrested two suspects, including a Congolese national in illegal possession of two grenades and a gun.
Elly Maate, Kigezi police spokesperson, said the two had been identified as Sadiki Gashendure, 29, a Congole resident of Karambo village, Bunagana in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Silvani Uwirangiye, 32, a resident of Gatete village, Rwaramba parish in Nyakinama sub-county, Kisoro district.
Maate said the two were arrested on Saturday on intelligence tip off, “when Sadiki Gashendure passed through Bunyangaro-Nyabwishenya Kisoro border from DRC with some firearms.”
“Immediately the security forces of UPDF and Police followed up to Kisoro township near Stanbic bank where he was arrested, and found in possession of two hand grenades,” Maate said.
“On interrogation, he revealed that he has an SMG rifle which is kept with Silvan Uwiragiye who was also arrested and led them to it’s recovery ( SMG rifle no. 56×20019268), together with 64 rounds of live ammunition which was buried in the banana plantation near his home in Gatete,” the police officer added.
All the recovered arms together with the two suspects are in police custody as investigations continue to establish the source, the motive and if there are more associates.
