Police capture 170kg of smuggled gold at Entebbe airport

Consignment believed to have originated from DRC and was heading to Dubai

ENTEBBE: Luck ran out for suspected smugglers as the Police at Entebbe International Airport seized their gold bars weighing about 170kg.

Sources at the airport told News Day website that the incident happened on Sunday night and the case is reportedly being investigated by the criminal investigations team at Entebbe Police Station.

Credible sources told this reporter that the said gold, which was destined for Dubai in UAE was discovered at the last stage of check-in as detectives put a keen eye on the consignment and demanded to know the content.

Police has discovered that the consignment was labelled with Serial Number 354632.

Preliminary investigations indicate that this consignment was from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and was owned by a Ugandan citizen identified as Sadam Yasin Mbabali. Mbabali operates a number of East African countries.

Investigators have also established that, this parcel was registered under the company of GOLD (FZE) office Q1-08-116/C, Sharjar.

Further investigations have also revealed that there are some other big companies belonging to top city tycoons, which helped in processing this illegal gold exportation.

According to police, investigations into the matter are still going on.
