A Ugandan man named Albert Nuwagaba is stuck between a hard place and a rock after being disowned by relatives amidst witch haunt by law enforcement officers.
Nuwagaba who has battled homophobic communities since his days in high school is a born of Kiruhura district, the same area where President Yoweri Museveni who signed the brutal Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023 hails from.
Available information indicates that Nuwagaba met a would-be partner while still in high school and despite family pressure to get a partner, he saw no harm in keeping in the company of Andrew Ndyamuhaki.
Trouble ensued when family members got to learn of his relationship with Andrew and chose to disown him.
Severally, Nuwagaba was arrested, tortured and scorned for being in a supposed gay relationship.
At one time, he was picked from a bar in one of the Kampala suburbs, handcuffed, thrown under a police van seats and interrogated by the police.
In country marred by corruption, Nuwagaba managed to bribe his way out of the torture chambers.
While hiding in the central district of Gomba after securing police bond, Nuwagaba was lucky to secure a visitor Visa in Canada and escape the sharp fangs of a society which strongly preaches against anything LGBTQ+.
His friend Andrew wasn’t as lucky as he was arrested and taken to one of islands where the highest mode of torture takes place.
Records at Kibuli centre of Criminal Investigations Department indicate that Nuwagaba was charged with various cases including public nuisance, engaging in homosexual activities and promoting homosexuality.
The cases, once convicted, can fetch up to life imprisonment under the current legal regime in Uganda.
Already the UK and US governments among others have cut aid to Uganda over the same brutal law and sanctioned top promoters of the same, including Speaker Anita Among, police and prison top bosses.
However, none of these moves has impacted on the lawmakers to reverse the anti-LGBTQ+ law.
