Hon Charles Ong’ondo Were an MP for Kasipul who described to Orange Democratic Party (ODM) was shot dead in Nairobi on Wednesday evening.

His party has said their memberwas gunned down by an unknown assailant along Ngong Road shortly after leaving Parliament, where he had participated in the day’s legislative business.

“We have received with shock and disbelief the tragic death of the Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were-MP Kaspul at the hands of a gunman along Ngong Road Nairobi this evening,” the party said.

“Hon. Were was in Parliament the better part of the day and left at 6:15 pm after participating in the business of the day.”

The party called “on the police to investigate the shooting incident and bring the culprits to book.”

Ong’ondo Were was serving his second term in Parliament and was widely regarded as a vocal legislator, particularly on issues affecting devolution and education.

Two months ago, the lawmaker claimed his life was in danger.

A member of the ODM party, he had been actively involved in grassroots mobilization and legislative work, often championing matters affecting the Lake Region.

He previously served as the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Education and was a key proponent of increased budgetary allocation to public schools in underserved regions.

The incident has sent shockwaves across the political landscape, with several lawmakers condemning the killing and demanding swift action by security agencies.

Kenya’s political class has in recent months raised concern over the rising threats to elected leaders, especially in urban centers.

While motives behind Hon. Were’s shooting remain unclear, speculation is rife as detectives begin piecing together the MP’s final movements.

Police had not yet issued an official statement on the incident by the time of publication.
