Buganda Kingdom has called for thorough investigations into the shooting of former Transport and Works Minister, Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala.

On Tuesday, unidentified gunmen shot dead Wamala’s daughter Brenda Nantongo and his driver, Haruna Kayondo died on the spot while the General escaped with gunshot wounds in the chest. The gunmen intercepted General Katumba, who was in his vehicle registration number H4DF 2138 along Kisaasi-Kisota road and sprayed it with bullets.

While addressing journalists at Bulange, Mengo, the Katikkiro (Prime Minister) of Buganda Peter Mayiga asked the government to immediately have a thorough investigation so that the culprits can be apprehended and brought to the book.

He appealed for a thorough investigation saying that so many people have been killed under similar circumstances but investigations, unfortunately, do not lead to anything since nobody has been brought before the courts of law and tried to a conclusive end.

“Many times, many people are apprehended following murders of this nature but then, there is no indication that these are the right culprits because many of them get released soon after and none of them gets tried in courts of law to a logical conclusion,” Mayiga said.

Several high profile killings by gunmen riding on motorcycles have in the past happened in the country.  On 17th March 2017, unknown gunmen shot dead the former Police Spokesperson, Andrew Felix Kaweesi, his bodyguard, Kenneth Erau and Driver, Godfrey Mambewa. The trio was gunned down, a few meters from Kaweesi’s home in Kulambiro in Kisaasi, a Kampala suburb.

Kaweesi’s assassination followed the murder of former State Prosecutor, Joan Kagezi in 2015 and Major Muhammad Kiggundu in 2016 in a similar style.  In June 2018, unidentified assailants also gunned down the then Arua Municipality Member of Parliament, Ibrahim Abiriga.

Other people killed similarly include Sheikh Abdul Karim Ssentamu, Hassan Ibrahim Kirya, the former Kibuli Spokesperson, Mustafa Bahiga, the former Kampala District Amir, Dr Abdulqadir Muwaya, the former top Shia Cleric in Uganda and Sheikh Abdulrashid Wafula, the former Imam Bilal Mosque in Mbale Town.
