More than 2,500 residents of Bugoba B and C in Kibizzi zone in Njeru municipality, Buikwe district are under threat of eviction.

The contested land on Kyaggwe block 346, measuring 31 hectares is claimed by Herbert Muyomba and Dorothy Nakimbugwe who have petitioned the court seeking forceful eviction for the continued stay on the land.

The claimants through their lawyers of Bwire and Waiswa company advocates have informed residents that they want to use the land and should desist from trespassing on the land and establish developments.

“Unless you remove your illegal structures from the land and immediately vacate, we shall halt commencement of legal proceedings to realize rights of our clients on their land.” The notice reads in parts.

The contested land accommodates residential and commercial houses, schools, markets and gardens and sugar plantations.

Rogers Opengele, a resident and the LCI chairperson of Bugoba B village says this is not the first time Muyomba and Nakimbugwe are ordering them to vacate.

“We insisted on staying on the land since it is public land, we reported this matter to the office of the Resident District Commissioner who has been closely following up this matter. To our surprise, we are being served with eviction threatening notices.” Opengele says.

Another resident Robert Mulwana wants the RDC to expedite investigations into the matter and also pass orders restricting the claimants from threatening residents with eviction.

The Resident District Commissioner Jane Francis Kagayi, says that they have established that the contested land is public land under the custodianship of the district and the new claimants have no rights over it.

The District Woman Member of Parliament Diana Mutasingwa who is also the State Minister in Charge of Office of the Vice President says she has reported the matter to the ministry of lands assuring residents that no one shall evict them.
